to Tynecastle High
SchoolIt has certainly been a great start of term in the new school. Despite the severe weather, we managed to open on time, with all facilities operating inside the building. You may have noticed the favourable press coverage, not least the fact our conference facilities were used to stage a national press conference for the BUPA Great Winter Run last Friday. Photographs and other details can be found in the Latest News section. You may have seen some of the students being led through a training session on the snow-covered Astroturf on BBC 1 last Saturday. I am really proud of the fact that the first training on the new ground was conducted by a current Olympic running champion.
The fact that we were able to hold such a major press conference on the very first day of the students attending the new school speaks volumes for the positive and co-operative attitude of our students, and really impressed the conference visitors. It was also great to have participation from our feeder primary students, who also put questions to the athletes and took part in the training session.It has also been amazing to see how quickly the staff have been able to get classroom areas up and running, and the 55 new Smart Boards are already being used extensively to enhance learning. I am not going to list all the superb features here as I intend for you to see them yourself at the earliest opportunity, and will be in touch once I have liaised with the Tynecastle School Community Group at the next meeting.
I have also been informing students that they should walk along McLeod Street on the football ground side before crossing to enter the school rather than crossing at the junction with Gorgie Road. This is on the advice of PC Cleghorn. I am also actively pursuing with the council ways of making access even safer and have informed the Tynecastle School Community Group (Parent Council) of developments so far.
I want to finish off by saying that I am convinced we now have the first class educational facility the students and staff deserve. It will allow all to meet their full potential. I have been emphasizing this to students in assemblies this week and I know that they will respond to the challenge. I have also been issuing replacement dining hall cards to those students who have lost them and urging them to consider sampling the excellent options available with our new catering providers. I am looking forward to working with you to ensure the best possible outcomes for all young people at Tynecastle High School and look forward to meeting you soon in the year ahead.
